WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE SPOT?

DREAMING OF IRELAND

Do you ever dream of going someplace again that you been before? How does it feel when you see photos of that place, whether their your photos or not?

For me that place is Ireland. I’ve been a few times now and fell in love with it that very first time on the approach to the airport as the plane was descending from the heavens onto a misty emerald green landscape. It’s pretty hard to describe the feeling of going there to others. It just is a happy feeling I guess that stays the whole time I’m there.

Even though it does tend to rain a lot there the people are extremely nice and the food isn’t bad either. Many castles and old history are abound and is extremely fascinating to check out. Walking along the shore of an ancient beach that has been battered for millennia is magical.

Being a photographer and carrying around a bunch of gear to snap shots is almost like a zen like feeling while there.

Where is your favorite spot or one you’d like to check out at some point? I have many other places I’d love to visit but I must say Ireland is still at the top of my list.

AN OLD STRANDED IRISH BOAT

I took this shot a little over a year ago on a trip to Ireland for business. This photo was taken while it was pretty windy and rain was coming down. I’m not sure if this boat would actually be in the water as the tide was out and it seemed pretty far from it, though I could be mistaken. The photo was shot on the coast of the inlet from the Atlantic towards Shannon and Limerick.

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY INSIGHTS

GOOGLE PLUS HANGOUT TONIGHT @ 10pm EST

Alex Koloskov & Dave Nitsche have been hosting a weekly google hangout. This will be the 6th one. It starts at 10pm EST. Tonight we’re going to discuss an assignment we were given to photograph a red wine bottle. That was the main subject and the rest was up to our imagination. There are some great photos so far and it will interesting to hear about the shots and how they were made.

THE STAINLESS STAGE

Have you ever been to Chicago? Or maybe you’ve seen a ton of photos of the ‘Bean’ that is heavily photographed here. I have to admit I’ve taken my share of photos of the Bean as well.

Just a stone throw away, or possibly a lob away, is this stage. They play live music here and from what I know it’s free. You can just bring a picnic, and hang out with friends and listen to great music.

The area is called Millennium Park which is home to not only this stage and the Bean, but a botanical garden and a couple giant square columns that have screens that display peoples faces. During the summer they spray water from those columns typically from the mouths of the people on the screen.

Do you have any interesting photos of Chicago you’d like to share? Make sure to leave links in your comments for us all to check them out.

BACK TO THE GRIND

Well, after 2.5 weeks traveling with my family in the UK and Germany we’re back and just about over our jet lag. I do love to travel and check out new places but I can safely say it’s always nice to get home and sleep in your own bed and have all of your own creature comforts in one place. Some things you manage without and sort of forget you actually have or do when your at home. It’s really good in a way as I find that, while away, you realize that you can manage without many things that you use/have at home. I will admit I took my camera gear and computer with me as those are material items I feel I can’t live without… At least at this point in my life.

TODAY’S PHOTO – EXTERNSTEINE ON A STORMY DAY

This is a shot of the Externsteine that is right near the northern town of Detmold, Germany where my wife grew up. The town is not that huge, in comparison to München (Munich) or Köln (Cologne) but there really is quite a bit going on around the city and not too far from it to explore.

This place is one of those cool places to explore and walk around. There are many trails to hike on around here not to mention being able to climb the steps carved into the rock to get on top from which you get a spectacular view of the surrounding country side. It’s quite an unusual and interesting place to check out. There are what appears to be rooms carved out at the bottom along with a mural carved on the outside.

Here is a link to wikipedia with more info on it: Externsteine on Wikipedia

Supposedly up to a million people visit this site each year. If your ever in this part of Germany I definitely recommend it. Especially on a nice, or at least, not too wet day.

Enjoy!

HIKING THE LONELY TRAIL

TODAY’S PHOTO – FOLLOW THE PATH

Last summer I had taken my kids on a hike near out town of Boulder, Colorado on the Anne E. White trail. The weather was beautiful and the wild flowers were in full bloom. While hiking along the trail with my kids far up ahead of me I was able to turn around and catch the trail behind us empty and wanting to be snapped.

BICYCLING IN BOULDER

So, the other day I was driving to work and pulled up behind someone at a stop sign waiting for a chance to make their turn. I hear shouting coming from my left as a bicyclist comes flying down the side walk. He’s screaming ‘GO GO GO!’. Then when he finally gets to the intersection starts yelling at the woman in front of me that she’s pulled through the stop sign and hasn’t moved. Then threatens her that he’ll sue her for everything she’s got if she does this again. Does what again? Block the intersection because she has to inch out beyond the stop sign so she can actually see the oncoming traffic?

My thought was that he’s complaining about his woman’s driving but here he is riding his bike on a sideWALK!!! It’s not called a sideRIDE. Isn’t there some law against riding on a sidewalk and demanding walkers move out of the way? They do it all the time.

TODAY’S PHOTO – SITKA BY THE SHORE

This was a view from our cabin when we had made port in Sitka, Alaska lat year. This little island seemed to inhabited by few houses. From our view we could see many little island like this traveled heavily by many fishing boats.
